Greetings!

Love Your Life says the happy chef on my Facebook feed as she prepares a three-ingredient gourmet meal in fifteen seconds. Penny the cat has the sass and wit to debate and delight her human and I am already a top fan. And the 10 things you need to do before you die, or the 10 things you need to practice to create happiness while you’re alive, always catch my attention while I escape from reality for a few minutes in between work-posting on our busy NASW-KY Facebook page. It’s the jumbotron of emotions and feelings that deserves the escapism of chatty cats and yummy foods and pictures of places I may never see in this lifetime but certainly show up at the perfect time to daydream.

The reality for each of us is that right now we are in a tailspin between the daily political changes and challenges here at home and across the country. For some, signing off social media is a mental health must-do to take a break, and for others it’s diving in the deep end of the endless stream of is-it-real-or-not. And wrapped around these struggles is how we balance our daily lives and all the demands on our individual realities. All I want to see before the summer is over is one more hummingbird in my yard…and world peace…yep, that’s what I hope Penny the cat will highlight in her next video chat.

And yet, we busy and amazing Kentucky social workers and students rise to the challenges, and we get the work done. In the next few weeks, we will see the unofficial end of summer when kiddos of all ages return to school. We are ready to kick-it-up and get our wonderful schools of social work and social work associations engaged in advocacy work as we not only plan the 2.25.25 Social Work Lobby Day, but chat about advocacy daily as the election approaches. Please be sure to join our August 9th NASW-KY Legislative and Advocacy Discussion(link below) as we know this Interim session has been a busy one and we need to prepare for what the 2025 session brings to the bluegrass.

We are empowering some great clinical discussions and plan to continue this on a monthly basis. Given the cuts to state and private insurance for behavioral health, we want to make sure we are active and persistent as these reductions negatively impact our clients and our ability to sustain practices and provide critical clinical care. The interstate compact also brings a lot of great questions and efforts ahead for us as we anticipate the first meeting in September with the Council of State Governments and know it will take at least 18-24 months from then to get the interstate compact up and active.

We are very excited about our first NASW-IN and NASW-KY virtual conference on September 30th and October 1st. Two full days of great presentations AND access to ALL of the presentations for additional CEU’s following the conference is a win-win and we certainly hope you can join this exciting opportunity to learn, network, and engage.

We are also preparing our 2024-2025 events and programs that will be both in person and virtually, so please let us know what YOU want and need from your busy and devoted Kentucky chapter. SO much going on, so please stay up to date with our NASW-KY Facebook page, or our website that has the Facebook feed attached to it. We will be hosting a get-to-know your NASW-KY chapter and board in September and can’t wait for this interactive opportunity. We are also scheduling school visits and plan to wrap meet and greets and some CEU’s too around our travels to see y’all.

As always, we are here for you and care about you and what you need from NASW/NASW-KY. May we each find time left in this hot and busy summer to do some of the things you need to sustain and bring you peace.

Best,

Brenda Rosen, MSW, CSW

Creating the Container for Us: How to Hold Space for Ourselves and Each Other After a Student Death

August 1 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm EDT

https://nacg.org/event/creating-the-container-for-us-how-to-hold-space-for-ourselves-and-each-other-after-a-student-death/

How might we build our skills and visions for how we will come together as staff after student loss? How might we make sense of school-based loss, and how that informs who we are as administrators, educators, clinicians, and youth advocates?

When students die, we understandably and necessarily mobilize to support our surviving students, their peers, and the connected community. We tend to assume, however, that the staff doing that mobilization are ok, and/or we forget to create space to make sense of what just happened  (let alone for what happened months ago, or even years ago).

The task of creating and holding space for the adult staff in a school, system, division, or organization after a student death is one that we, as administrators, staff, and school leadership, rarely get support with. Join SCRR for a dynamic session on how to facilitate space-holding for educators after a student dies, & the role of collective rituals in processing.

Participants will learn how to organize a gathering and the ins and outs of holding space: from how to structure a gathering to how to care for yourself and others to what to do when things go awry. You’ll also have a chance to experience a space for educator communal care firsthand and to share and reflect on your own experiences of loss and life after.

Continuing Education (CE) Total: 1.5 hours have been applied for, pending approval.
Target Audience:
Counselors, Social workers, Bereavement support professionals
Instructional Level:Basic – This best describes a topic or issue that the prospective audience is encountering for the first time in a meaningful way

Greetings!

Juneteenth. Pride Month. Father’s Day. Graduations. Summer begins…what a wonderful time in our state to celebrate!

NASW-KY IS HONORED TO WORK WITH KASWE – KENTUCKY ASSOCIATION OF SOCIAL WORK EDUCATORS – AND WE ARE EXCITED TO SHARE THIS IMPORTANT OPPORTUNITY FROM DR. ERIN STEVENSON, KASWE PRESIDENT:

Dear KASWE Colleagues,

I want to personally invite you to submit an article for review in a Special Issue of Youth (ISSN 2673-995X), titled “Resilience, Strength, Empowerment and Thriving of LGTBQIA+ Youth”.  The link for more information is here: https://www.mdpi.com/si/207984  You are welcome to forward to others who might be interested!

I am serving as a guest editor for this issue, so please feel free to reach out with questions about appropriateness of an article or topic. erin.stevenson@eku.edu

This issue will be focused on young people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and/or other diverse and vibrant sexual orientations and gender identities (LGBTQIA+).

While many research and scholarly efforts focus on the wounds, trauma, and stress that LGBTQIA+ youth endure, we recognize a scarcity of work on the resilience, strength, empowerment, coping, and thriving of LGBTQIA+ youth. We are interested in promoting the visibility of a more balanced narrative that includes both the familiar themes of struggle and the growth that emerges as a result of and in spite of those challenges.

This Special Issue aims to expand our perspectives on how LGBTQIA+ young people are flourishing and how we can support their continued growth, positive social connectedness, and development into adulthood. We invite contributions across disciplines and diverse methodologies from researchers and practitioners around the globe.

Guest Editors: Dr. Erin Stevenson- Eastern Kentucky University, Dr. Gregory Sandman - Eastern Kentucky University, Dr. James McGinn - Eastern Kentucky University, Dr. Quentin Hunter – Eastern Michigan University, Dr. Nathaniel L. Smith – University of Houston

The 'Inside Out' movies give kids an 'emotional vocabulary.' Therapists love that
Kristi Zybulewski, a clinical social worker, says that most of the teenagers she works with have seen Inside Out, often on the recommendation of a therapist. She said she's grateful for the movie because it gives kids an "emotional vocabulary" so they can name their feelings and because it supports what she tells her students in therapy: "All emotions are welcome. ... They're all necessary. They're all meaningful. They're all rich." https://buff.ly/4c2Jzfa via @NPR #NASW

CERTIFICATE IN ADVANCED PSYCHOTHERAPY TRAINING

PROGRAM VIRTUAL OPEN HOUSE DATES

Join us for a virtual Open House session on select Fridays, from noon to 1pm CT, to learn more about our renowned Certificate in Advanced Psychotherapy Training program, designed for licensed practitioners and clinical supervisors who are interested in expanding and updating clinical skills, enriching care provided to clients, and wanting to enhance their overall practice.

Greetings!

Please enjoy all of the great events and informaton we are sharing with you from our busy Kentucky chapter and National office. The last round of tote bags are being mailed and we could not be happier to get them to you….and my husband is happy he can finally park his car in the garage again now that 26 huge boxes are gone! 😊I want to share what a rewarding experience it was to address each of the mailers with the message and tote in them. When we say how grateful we are for your membership, we mean it.It was an honor to write out each of your names, to learn where you live, even some places I had never heard of before and am excited to learn more about. And what fun I had going back and forth to the post office to drop off boxes of mailers because I got a lot of questions from customers about them and it gave me a chance to highlight what social workers do and what an honor it is to celebrate our members for all YOU do for our people and the bluegrass state. We may not be a large chapter…yet…but we promise to do anything we can to support you and the things that matter to you.As always, we are here for you and look forward to more connections across this busy and amazing state we call home.

Best,
